Can I go to jail for not paying a consumer loan?

I took out a small consumer loan with Sun Loan Company. It was not a payday loan and no checks changed hands. Since then, I was in a terrible car accident and am now on SSI and Social Security. I did move out of state because I have 3 children that I could not take care of due to the accident. They are now calling my family everyday, threatening to take me to jail, telling them it will be considered theft over 1000. Which I dont understand because the loan was only for 250.00. What are my rights here and how can I get this resolved without going to jail? Thank you, Paula
