How many comets orbit our Sun?

When did we first start seeing comets? When was the last discovery? How long do comets live? When do comets turn into asteroids? The comet tail looks as if the debris is falling off the comet at a astronomical rate. How does a whole bunch of stuff fall off the comet and it looks as if the comet is the same size as 100 years ago?
