In an eruption that is producing a high fountains, what is going on with respect to gas in the magma?

If by high fountains you mean the pyroclastic column, H2O and/or CO2 are the gaseous components that makes a volcano erupt with pyroclasts. Less gy magma will not erupt, but rather, flow, like the basalt in Hawaii.
